Studiocanal nabs 32 nominations
LONDON — Steve McQueen’s “Shame,” Tomas Alfredson’s “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” and Paddy Considine’s “Tyrannosaur” lead the British Independent Film Awards race, nabbing seven nominations each.All three pics will battle it out for best film, director and actor, and best supporting actor or actress awards. “We Need to Talk About Kevin,” helmed by Lynne Ramsay and “Kill List,” helmed by Ben Wheatley each receive six noms, while “Submarine” follows closely with five. Thesps battling for best actor include Brendan Gleeson (“The Guard”), Neil Maskell (“Kill List”), Michael Fassbender (“Shame”), Gary Oldman (“Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”) and Peter Mullan (“Tyrannosaur”). Best actress nods went to Rebecca Hall (“The Awakening”), Mia Wasikowska (“Jane Eyre”), MyAnna Buring (“Kill List”), Olivia Colman (“Tyrannosaur”) and Tilda Swinton (“We Need to Talk About Kevin”). “Senna,” “Shame,” “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy,” “Tyrannosaur” and “We Need to Talk About Kevin” will all battle it out for film, while Wheatley (“Kill List”), McQueen (“Shame”), Alfredson (“Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy”), Considine (“Tyrannosaur”) and Ramsay (“We Need to Talk About Kevin”) are all nominated for best director. Studiocanal leads the distrib race by a long run this year with a record 32 nominations out of a total of 75 BIFA noms. Both Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hardy from “Tinker, Tailor, Solder, Spy,” which was produced by Working Title and fully financed by Studiocanal, are nominated in the best supporting actor category, while “Submarine,” also distributed by Studiocanal, has two noms in the most promising newcomer category with thesps Craig Roberts and Yasmin Paige. The Raindance Award nominees at the BIFAs are “Acts of Godfrey,” “Black Pond,” “Hollow,” “Leaving Baghdad” and “A Thousand Kisses Deep.” The jury comprises helmer-scribe Josh Appignanesi, casting director Lucy Bevan, thesp David Thewlis, presenter Edith Bowman and producer Tracey Seaward, among others. The BIFAs will take place in London on Dec. 4.
