The UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television has set U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer as 2011 commencement speaker on June 10.
Alumni Mariska Hargitay and writer/director Charles Burnett will receive Distinguished Alumni Awards at the ceremony. Boxer, who was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1992, was just re-elected for her fourth term. Senator Boxer has received many awards for her efforts for environmental health.
Hargitay stars in “Law & Order: SVU” on NBC and founded the Joyful Heart Foundation in 2004. The foundation’s goal is to heal, educate, and empower survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, and child abuse.
Burnett has brought personal portrayals of African-American life to the screen and recently received a retrospective of his work at New York’s Museum of Modern Art.
