Fall release targeted for black comedy

Screen Media has picked up U.S. rights to “The Lie,” the black comedy that bowed earlier this year at Sundance.

Joshua Leonard (“Humpday”), soon to be seen in upcoming Sony Pictures Classics release “Higher Ground,” directs, stars and pens the screenplay of the pic based on a short story by T. C. Boyle. Storyline follows a nine-to-fiver for whom a single lie, told to get him out of work for a day, prompts a slew of unexpected consequences.

Jess Weixler and Mark Webber also are among the cast. Mary Pat Bentel produces with exec producers Siriam Das and Mitchell Goldman of Das Films.

Distribution deal was pacted by Robert Baruc and Suzanne Blech for Screen Media with UTA’s Rena Ronson and Bec Smith.

Gotham-based indie distributor Screen Media targets a fall release for “The Lie,” with theatrical runs in select cities timed to a day-and-date VOD release.
