Screen Australia dances with ‘Matilda’

Funding arm backs new round of Aussie pics

SYDNEY — Funding org Screen Australia has announced a further round of coin with news it will back pics by “Mao’s Last Dancer” helmer Bruce Beresford and Adam Elliot.

Beresford will direct “Banjo and Matilda,” based on the true story of how Aussie bush poet “Banjo” Paterson came to write his famous poem, “Waltzing Matilda.”

Elliot, who won an Oscar for the animated short “Mary and Max” in 2010, will write and helm another animated adventure romance called “Ernee.”

There are two rock biopics in the mix. Helmer Richard Lowenstein’s “Michael” is about former INXS frontman Michael Hutchence, who committed suicide in 1997. Hutchence made his acting bow in Lowenstein’s 1986 pic “Dogs in Space.”

“Bon Scott,” from helmer Eddie Martin, will look at the wild life of the former lead singer of Oz rock icons AC/DC.
