Scott Cooper takes on ‘Furnace’

Filmmaker to pen, helm pic for Relativity

“Crazy Heart” filmmaker Scott Cooper will write and direct “Out of the Furnace” for Relativity Media.

“Furnace” is based on Brad Ingelsby’s story “The Low Dweller,” and is envisioned as a gritty throwback to pics of the 1970’s. Plot follows an ex-con bent on avenging the death of his brother as soon as he’s released from prison.

Relativity is producing along with Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way and Ridley and Tony Scott’s banner Scott Free, as well as Energy Entertainment.

“Scott Cooper drew raw emotion from the story and inspired amazing performances from his actors in ‘Crazy Heart.’ We are excited for him to shepherd this project,” said Relativity’s Tucker Tooley.

“Out of the Furnace” is expected to go into production later this year.

Cooper is repped by ICM.
