'Extremely Loud,' 'Tinker,' 'Artist' benefit from holiday

Upscale auds continued to hit cinemas in force over the long weekend, checking out Christmas opener “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” and supporting holdovers “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” and “The Artist.”

Warner Bros.’ “Extremely Loud” scored a solid opening-day per-screen average of $11,753 from six locations. (The studio is estimating that the film will collect around $136,000 in two days.)

“Tinker Tailor,” from Focus Features, posted a strong four-day per-screen

average of roughly $22,000, with a weekend take of $1.2 million at 55 theaters. Pic’s domestic cume reached $2.3 million through Monday.

According to Focus, “Tinker” continues to play strongly at holdover houses such as L.A.’s Landmark, where the film lost only to “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” beating new entries “War Horse” and “Extremely Loud.” FilmDistrict’s Angelina Jolie directorial debut, “In the Land of Blood and Honey,” did less in four days, averaging $9,276 from three engagements for an estimated weekend total of $27,827.

In three days, Chinese Oscar entry “The Flowers of War” posted a solid debut per-screen average of $13,982 from three playdates, with one each in New York, L.A. and San Francisco. Pic tallied almost $42,000.

The Weinstein Co., meanwhile, broadened this weekend its holdover pair, “The Artist” and “My Week with Marilyn,” with the latter pic playing at 602 locations, yielding an estimated three-day gross just north of $888,000. But “The Artist,” which played at far fewer engagements (167), actually did better, tallying through Monday an estimated $1.4 million. “Marilyn” has cumed $7.3 million; “The Artist,” $2.9 million.

David Glasser, chief operating officer at Weinstein, attributed that to the studio’s patient rollout strategy for “The Artist.”

“People are still discovering the film,” Glasser said. “Now, what we’re seeing in the exits is that people are coming out of it saying, ‘That wasn’t what I expected.'”
