‘Salmon’ to open Palm Springs

Lasse Hallstrom film gets gala fest screening Jan. 5

The 23rd annual Palm Springs International Film Festival will open on Jan. 5 with a gala screening of “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen,” the fest announced Thursday.

Director Lasse Hallstrom’s “Salmon Fishing,” which CBS Films acquired at the Toronto Film Festival in September, is just one of more than 60 premieres at the PSIFF this year. The festival will include 187 films from 73 countries.

“It’s a wide ranging lineup of highly accomplished and often provocative new films, coupled with an expanded archival section,” said festival director Darryl Macdonald.

The closing-night gala on Jan. 15 will showcase the comedy “Almanya, Welcome to Germany.” “The German arthouse hit of the year, Yasemin Samdereli’s ‘Almanya, Welcome to Germany,’ marks the arrival of an exciting new voice,”artistic director Helen du Toit said. “In fact, the festival is positively bursting with the work of emerging filmmakers this year.”

Two films will world preem at the fest: “If I Were You,” which stars Marcia Gay Harden and Aidan Quinn; and “A Thousand Cuts,” starring Michael O’Keefe. The festival will also feature a special presentation of Steven Soderbergh’s “Haywire.”
