Disney hasn't yet signed a director

Disney has signed screenwriter Terry Rossio to pen a fifth “Pirates of the Caribbean.”

Studio confirmed the deal Thursday night. Rossio and partner Ted Elliott have teamed to pen the first four “Pirates” pics along with “Aladdin,” “The Mask of Zorro” and “Shrek.”

The fourth pic, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” is directed by Rob Marshall and is currently in post-production for a May 20 release. Disney hasn’t yet signed a director for the fifth “Pirates.”

“Stranger Tides” was the first feature greenlit by Rich Ross after he became studio chairman in October, 2009. Under Ross’s watch, the studio has been devoting most of its development and production dollars to making only a few movies per year — with the aim of capitalizing on the appeal of the Disney brand with moviegoers.

The three “Pirates of the Caribbean” films have grossed more than $2.6 billion worldwide.
