Costa Reis, Josephson to be exec producers
RCR Media Group is coming on board to co-finance Summit Entertainment’s re-imagination of the “Highlander” franchise.
Summit has been working on “Highlander” since 2008, when it acquired remake rights for the 1986 original from Davis-Panzer Prods. and assigned “Iron Man” scribes Art Marcum and Matt Holloway to pen the script. In September 2009, the minimajor announced that it was gearing up the fantasy actioner with Neal Moritz producing and Justin Lin directing.
Moritz and longtime “Highlander” producer Peter Davis will produce the project and RCR Media Group principles Rui Costa Reis and Eliad Josephson will exec produce.
Summit plans to expand on the original “Highlander” premise of immortals hunting each other through the ages. The new pic will center on the immortal Scottish swordsman Connor MacLeod, who must confront a murderous barbarian — the last of his kind — who lusts for a fabled prize.
Costa Reis said, ” ‘Highlander’ is a property that is known around the world and Summit’s re-imagination is sure to appeal to existing and new fans of the ‘Highlander’ lore.”
Josephson said that RCR hopes that “Highlander” is the first of many projects on which it will team with Summit.
The 1986 film was directed by Russell Mulcahy and starred Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery, Clancy Brown and Roxanne Hart. It launched four sequels and three TV spinoffs.
As for RCR Media Group, it announced an extension of its deal with Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions to co-finance a slate of films for this year and next.
RCR first partnered with Sony in 2009 to produce “30 Days of Night: Dark Days” and “Stomp the Yard 2: Homecoming.” Upcoming titles under the deal include “S.W.A.T.: Firefight,” “Hostel Part III” and “Quarantine 2: Terminal” and acquisitions such as “The Hit List.”
