Quebec auds toast ‘Tintin’

Having already conquered the overseas box office with $223.2 million, Steven Spielberg’s “The Adventures of Tintin” turned its focus toward North American wickets over the Dec. 9-11 weekend — but in Quebec only.

Paramount, which handles domestic rights for the film (that includes the U.S. and Canada), won’t launch the pic Stateside until Dec. 21.

Given “Tintin’s” European origins, Par opted to release the film first in Canada, and exclusively in Quebec — a decision that paid off in spades, as “Tintin” landed four of the weekend’s top 10 domestic theaters — beating out Stateside releases “New Year’s Eve” and “The Sitter” — with a total $1.45 million through Dec. 11.

“Tintin” tallied enough over the weekend to rank No. 1 overall at the Canadian B.O. (Par plans to incorporate the film’s Canadian take into its U.S. opening next week as previews.)

So far, “Tintin” has grossed a whopping $224.7 million worldwide from 51 offshore markets.

Par and Sony have divvied up distribution rights for most of the world, with Par handling all English-speaking territories, as well as Asia (except India and Japan), while Sony has the remaining markets. Both studios have inked a deal whereby they will evenly split their portion of the film’s worldwide gross.
