Org seeks to unite nation's filmmakers, award local pics
Lisbon-based producer Paulo Trancoso announced the launch of the Portuguese Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Friday. Trancoso, whose past credits include Bille August’s 1994 pic “House of the Spirits,” says the Academy aims to launch an annual award ceremony, co-funded by Portugal’s TV stations, inspired by the U.K.’s BAFTA awards, France’s Cesar awards and Spain’s Goyas.
The new umbrella organization will attempt to unite the various factions of the Portuguese film world, often torn by the divide between art films and commercial films.
The org has 340 members registered, including directors Manoel de Oliveira, Teresa Villaverde and Fernando Vendrell and thesp Maria de Medeiros.
A general meeting is scheduled for Sept. 26 to decide the name of the future awards and elect the members of the Academy’s governing bodies.
