Mendes documentary will compete for foreign-lingo film award

Portugal will send Miguel Goncalves Mendes’ documentary “Jose and Pilar” about the final years of Nobel Prize-winning novelist Jose Saramago as its entry for the foreign-language film Oscar.

The 128-minute pic was co-produced by the director’s shingle JumpCut, Fernando Meirelles’ O2 and Pedro Almodovar’s El Deseo. U.S. and Canada rights have been sold to Outsider Pictures.

The deadline for all countries to send in their submissions is Oct. 1. The 84th Academy Awards will be held Feb. 26 at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.
