‘Pompeii,’ ‘Tarzan 3D’ sell to Latin America

Imagem gets rights to Constantin pics

EXCLUSIVE– Brazilian indie distrib Imagem Filmes has snapped up rights for Latin America on “Pompeii” and “Tarzan 3D,” closing one of the big outstanding territories on the fast-selling duo.

Sold by Summit, both films are produced by Germany’s Constantin Film.

“Pompeii,” helmed by Paul W.S. Anderson and distributed Stateside by Summit, reunites the director, producer, sales company and U.S. distributor behind “The Three Musketeers.”

Animated feature “Tarzan 3D” is helmer Richard Klooss’ follow-up to “Animals United,” which had earned around $60 million internationally by late April.

Imagem will distribute the pics in Brazil and mull options for sub-licensing in the rest of Latin America.

The second biggest indie distributor in Brazil last year, Imagem topped first quarter 2011 distributor rankings, besting Hollywood studio offshoots, thanks to “Season of the Witch,” “The Fighter,” “The Next Three Days” and Brazilian call-girl tale “Bruna Surfistinha.”

“We’re focusing more and more on bigger titles,” said Ivan Boeing, Imagem’s director of international acquisitions. “They can really compete with Hollywood fare for release dates. There are only 52 weekends in the year and a lot more films to be released.”
