People’s Choice gets upgrade

Kudocast goes viral

For its 37th edition on Jan. 5, the People’s Choice Awards branched out to embrace new technology: Fans cast their vote via Twitter. YouTube’s “‘Single Ladies’ Devastation” won favorite viral video. And presenters passed up traditional envelopes in favor of smartphones for the reading of the names of kudo winners.

“Once I learned you could vote more than once a day … I encouraged people to do that,” said Neil Patrick Harris, feted for favorite TV comedy actor. During his acceptance speech, Harris sent a special message to his newborn twins, Gideon and Harper, in genuine baby talk. “Once they start laughing, I’m going to be head over heels for these two,” Harris shared. “Then I’ll think they’re laughing at my comedy.”

The kudocast at L.A. Live’s Nokia Center handed awards in categories like Favorite Movie Star Under 25 and Favorite TV Guilty Pleasure.

After Jane Lynch won for TV comedy actress, everyone wanted to know what’s up next for her “Glee” character. She wasn’t sure, but wondered, “It would be lovely if Javier Bardem were to show up as Sue Sylvester’s old Spanish lover.”

The common complaint of the evening was the weight and sharp edges of the People’s Choice kudo itself, but Conan O’Brien, who called it “the most dangerous award, especially if you have kids,” was grateful for the statuette anyway. “It’s been a crazy year, but this was a nice cap.”
