Australian pics head to the fest

COMPETITION

“Sleeping Beauty”
Julia Leigh’s “Sleeping Beauty” has been selected for competition, the first Aussie feature in the main strand since Baz Luhrmann’s “Moulin Rouge” in 2001, although “Bright Star,” the Aussie-Blighty co-prod, made it in 2009.
Leigh penned the pic about a student who drifts into an extreme type of prostitution.
“I wanted to make a film where the audience responds with ‘did I really see that?’ and ‘did I really hear that?’ and ‘can such a thing really exist’? A response of intense wonder rather than shock,” she says.

“Bear”
The Aussie short “Bear,” by helmer Nash Edgerto, will have its world preem in competition.
Produced by Lauren Edwards and helmer and Tropfest creator John Polson and written by Nash Edgerton and David Michod, pic tells the story of Jack, his new girlfriend and lessons he hasn’t quite learnt. Pic is produced by Blue-Tongue Films, in association with Peachy Pictures, Tropfest and fxphd.

UN CERTAIN REGARD

“Toomelah”
“Toomelah,” from indigenous director Ivan Sen, tells the story of a boy in a remote Aboriginal community who dreams of becoming a gangster.
Sen used many non-pros from his home town. Pic features young thesps Daniel Conners and Christopher Edwards, who are both receiving high praise for their roles.
“It will be an honor to take the movie and the cast to Cannes,” says Sen. “One of them has never been on a plane before and the lead actor, Daniel, has only been as far as Brisbane.”

CRITICS’ WEEK

“Snowtown”
Aussie serial killer pic “Snowtown” will screen in this section of the fest. Justin Kurzel helms the story of John Bunting, one of Oz’s most well-known real life serial killers, from the perspective of a troubled youth that he befriends.
Pic has been criticized by family members of Bunting’s victims but praised for its sensitive tone. “Snowtown” stars Lucas Pittaway and Daniel Henshall.
