Europe’s largest exhibition chain, Odeon and UCI Cinemas, is expanding in Italy, buying seven plexes with 51 screens.
The group, owned by U.K. private equity firm Terra Firma Capital Partners, has closed a long-gestating deal with Circuito Giometti Cinema.
UCI Italy topper Andrea Stratta estimates that the acquisition will add an average 2.5 million admissions to its business per year. It now has 420 screens in 39 sites in Italy.
“With these multiplexes our yearly estimated admissions will surpass the 20 million spectators milestone in Italy,” Stratta said.
UCI Italy bought the Pathe and Vis Pathe loops in Italy in December and four UGC Cine Cite sites last month. Move also comes after recent growth in Spain and Ireland, reflecting a larger European expansion plan.
The group operates 2,113 screens at 224 sites across Europe.
