NYFF to fete ‘Method,’ ‘Skin’

Festival sets gala screenings

The New York Film Festival has lined up David Cronenberg’s “A Dangerous Method” and Pedro Almodovar’s “The Skin I Live In” for gala screenings as part of the upcoming 2011 edition of the fest.

“Method” and “Skin” join a lineup that opens with Roman Polanski’s “Carnage.” Simon Curtis’ Michelle Williams starrer “My Week With Marilyn” has been tapped for the centerpiece screening.

“Method,” soon to have its world preem at Venice before it screens in Toronto, will mark the first time a film by Cronenberg has had a spot in NYFF. Set to be released by Sony Pictures Classics on Nov. 23, the film stars Michael Fassbender and Viggo Mortensen in a story about the relationship between Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung and a seductive patient played by Keira Knightley.

“Skin,” which bowed this spring at Cannes, follows a plastic surgeon (Antonio Banderas) who imprisons a woman so he can use her as a guinea pig for bizarre treatments. Also distributed by SPC, pic will be released in the U.S. on Oct. 14.

NYFF’s “Method” gala is set for Oct. 5, with “Skin” skedded for Oct. 12.

The Film Society of Lincoln Center’s 49th annual NYFF will be the first since the opening of the newly constructed film center on the campus of Lincoln Center. The full 2011 slate of 25 to 28 films, and the fest’s complete complement of sidebar series, remain to be announced prior to the start of the fest, running Sept. 30-Oct. 16.
