Music Box nabs ‘Conquest’

Film screened out of competition at Cannes

Music Box Films has snapped up U.S. rights to French political drama “The Conquest.”

Film, which screened out of competition on May 18 at Cannes, is directed by Xavier Durringer and focuses on the political ascendency of the current French president Nicolas Sarkozy.

Music Box announced the deal Wednesday and said planning an aggressive US theatrical release to precede the upcoming American presidential primary season.

The film was produced by Mandarin Films in association with Canal+.

“Conquest,” based on public documents and first person accounts, focuses on the political maneuvers undertaken by Sarkozy in the five years leading up to winning the 2007 election along with the simultaneous unraveling of his marriage.

Denis Podalydes portrays Sarkozy, whose nervous energy earned him the nickname, “The Energizer Bunny.”

Music Box partners Edward Arentz and William Schopf negotiated the deal with Cecile Gagnet and Yohann Comte of Gaumont, the film’s international sales agent.
