Italo helmer's pic heats up at Cannes
EXCLUSIVE: Sales are heating up on Italo helmer Nanni Moretti’s competition player “We Have a Pope,” which Fandango Portobello expects to close out by the end of the Cannes market.
“Pope” has been picked up by Prokino for Germany, Transmission Films for Australia, Thomas Enterprise for South Korea, and Cineplex Development for Taiwan.
There is serious interest from a U.S. distributor, according to Fandango Portobello’s Janine Gold, who said a slew of other sales, including Latin America, Japan, Russia and Spain, are imminent.
“Pope” stars Michel Piccoli as a panicked, newly elected pontiff and Moretti as his shrink.
“Buyers are responding to the comedic aspects of the film which resonates on a number of levels,” Gold said.
Moretti won the Palme d’Or in 2001 with “The Son’s Room.”
