Monterey Media has acquired U.S. rights to Monte Hellman’s crime drama “Road to Nowhere” and set a late spring release.
“Road,” which premiered at the Venice Film Festival, stars Shannyn Sossamon, Dominique Swain, Waylon Payne, Cliff de Young, John Diehl and Tygh Runyan.
The film will have its U.S. premiere on Saturday at the Palm Springs Film Festival, which is honoring Hellman with a retrospective of his films and the fest’s Maverick Filmmaker Award.
Project’s produced by Hellman, Variety executive editor Steven Gaydos and Melissa Hellman. Script by Gaydos centers on a cult film director’s efforts to make his next movie and is set in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina.
“Road to Nowhere” was shot in Los Angeles and the Smoky Mountains in the U.S.; Lago di Garda, Verona and Rome, Italy; and London. Entertainment One holds the worldwide sales rights; Capricci Films is releasing it next month in France, Spain and Belgium.
Hellman’s credits include “Two Lane Blacktop,” “Cockfighter,” “Iguana,” “Back Door to Hell,” “Flight to Fury” “The Shooting” and “Ride in the Whirlwind.” He exec produced Quentin Tarantino’s “Reservoir Dogs.”
