Thesps getting set for World War II thriller
EXCLUSIVE: Danish thesp Mads Mikkelsen (“The Three Musketeers”) and Germany’s Til Schweiger are getting set to go mano a mano in World War II thriller “War Below Zero.”
Icelandic helmer Agust Gudmundsson (“The Seagull’s Laughter”) is directing the pic, a stripped down thriller about two enemy meteorologists, a Dane and a German, who are posted to Greenland in order to control the weather reports and gain the upper hand in the North Atlantic U-boat war between the Allied and Axis powers. While the two are also enemy combatants, they become dependent on one another to survive in the harsh winter environment. “War Below Zero” is set to lens in March in Iceland and Sweden.
“War Below Zero” is based on a script by Anders Thomas Jensen, who wrote the Oscar-winning “In a Better World,” and produced by Tivi Magnusson of Copenhagen-based M&M Prods., Schweiger and Tom Zickler’s Barefoot Films and Jens Meurer of fellow Berlin company Egoli Tossell Film.
Mikkelsen and Schweiger are both in talks for the leads.
If Schweiger takes the part, it would be a rare dramatic role for one of Germany’s biggest stars. The actor, who also appeared in Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds,” has in recent years focused primarily on romantic comedies, such as the “Rabbit Without Ears” films and the more recent “Kokowaah.” Mikkelsen, one of Scandinavia’s most popular thesps, starred in “Valhalla Rising” and “Clash of the Titans.”
