MGM is coming onboard to help finance Sony’s upcoming “21 Jump Street,” the latest in a string of partnerships between the Lion and Sony.
Sony will handle marketing and distribution, while MGM will handle select international TV licensing for the film, set to be released domestically next March.
The latest Sony-MGM team was announced a day after MGM came on as a financial partner on Sony’s “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” which David Fincher is directing from a script by Steve Zaillian. As with “21 Jump Street,” Sony will handle marketing and distribution, while MGM will handle some international TV licensing on the thriller.
Projects are part of Sony and MGM’s recent pact to explore co-financing opportunities on upcoming features. Studios recently partnered on the 23rd Bond pic, which will hit theaters in November 2012.
MGM and Sony partnered on financing the Kevin James comedy “Zookeeper,” which Sony will open in the U.S. on July 8.
