It nabs fest favorites from Submarine
TORONTO — Gotham’s Submarine Entertainment has sold Canadian rights for four fest-fave documentaries to Ron Mann’s boutique distributor filmswelike.
Pics include “Bill Cunningham New York,” Richard Press’ portrait of the New York Times’ photog; “Blank City,” Celine Danhier’s look at Gotham’s underground filmmaking scene circa 1977-87; “The Last Mountain,” Bill Haney’s story of activists’ fight to save the last great Appalachian mountain; and “Resurrect Dead: The Mystery of the Toynbee,” the street-tile forensic adventure that won helmer Jon Foy the director’s prize for U.S. docu at Sundance.
The four-pic deal was negotiated by Mann and Submarine’s David Koh, Josh Braun and Dan Braun.
“One often hears at film festivals that documentaries played better than the fiction films. Case in point: these documentaries, which all played major film festivals struck us as really the best in contemporary cinema,” said Mann, who plans to release all four titles theatrically, followed by DVD and digital release.
