Maniatis to head New Mexico film office

Appointment comes in wake of cap of state's film credit

Nick Maniatis has been tapped as director of the New Mexico Film Office.

Maniatis joins the film office after serving as exec director of New Mexico Independent Power Producers, and as a board member of the Governor’s Council on Film and Media as well as the Digital Film Institute. He also has worked on shows such as “Candid Camera” and “Grace Under Fire.”

“With Nick’s leadership, we’re looking forward to the film industry continuing to be an important part of New Mexico’s economy,” said Jon Barela, secretary-designate of the state’s Economic Development Dept.

Maniatis said he hopes to foster an environment that encourages long-term job and economic growth in communities across New Mexico.

The appointment comes in the wake of cuts to many states’ film incentive programs, including New Mexico’s.

In March, Gov. Susana Martinez, a Republican, proposed slashing the state’s program and capping incentives at $50 million annually. The state legislature approved the cuts, which go into effect July 1.
