Mamut, Cine-Sud walk the ‘Line’

Screenplay complete on Cinefondation Atelier selection

Mexico’s Mamut Cine and France’s Cine-Sud Promotion are linking to produce helmer Celso Garcia’s “The Thin Yellow Line.”

Selected for this year’s Canne Cinefondation Atelier, “Line” turns on five men hired to paint a yellow line on a lonely road joining two long-forgotten Mexican towns in the desert.

Mexico’s Araceli Velazquez and Carlos Taibo produce. Cine-Sud’s Thierry Lenouvel co-produces.

Garcia, who caught attention with the short “Leche y agua,” has completed the screenplay. “Line,” which will shoot February-March, has received Foprocine funding from the Mexican Film Institute. The producers will reach out to international co-production partners at the Atelier.

One of France’s leading co-producers with Latin America, Cine-Sud has also boarded Colombian Carlos Osuna’s “Fat, Bald, Short Man,” an animated feature mixing rotoscoping, line-drawn 2D and CGI backgrounds to chronicle the life of a chronically shy law clerk.

“Fat,” which won two prizes at March’s Guadalajara Construye showcase, screens in the market on today.

Lenouvel also co-produced “In the Open,” the fiction feature debut of Argentina’s Hernan Belon. Like “Fat,” it receives its world market premiere at Cannes.

Lenouvel will seek a festival berth for “Open” before attaching a sales agent, he said.
