Magnet takes ‘Innkeepers’

Theatrical, VOD release for ghost story

Magnet Releasing, the genre label of Magnolia Pictures, has picked up U.S. theatrical and VOD rights to Ti West’s ghost story “The Innkeepers.”

Pic will bow on Ultra VOD, which makes films available on digital platforms prior to a theatrical run.

Written and directed by West, “The Innkeepers” centers on a soon-to-shutter hotel whose employees try to find proof the old place is haunted before the inn is closed entirely. Sara Paxton, Pat Healy and Kelly McGillis star.

Plot was inspired by an experience the filmmaker had during the shoot for his 2009 outing “The House of the Devil.” also a Magnet release.

“Innkeepers” preemed at SXSW earlier this year and has since made the rounds of other fests on the circuit. Derek Curl, Peter Phok, West and Larry Fessenden produce for MPI/Dark Sky Films, in partnerhsip with Glass Eye Pix.

Distribution deal was pacted by Dori Begley and Chris Matson of Magnet with Greg Newman of MPI Media Group.

Film hits Ultra VOD Dec. 30 ahead of a February run in theaters. MPI plans a subsequent DVD release.
