Lumière Awards to fete Polanski

Helmer expected to attend Jan. 14 ceremony

Roman Polanski will be feted with an homage during the 16th Lumiere Awards ceremony on Jan. 14 in Paris.

Polanski is expected to attend the ceremony.

The honorary prize, to be presented by Serge Toubiana, general director of the French Cinematheque, will pay tribute to the 77-year-old helmer’s career with clips from “The Pianist,” “Chinatown” and “Rosemary’s Baby” among others.

His latest film, “The Ghost Writer,” is nominated for three Lumieres — director, film and screenplay.

Last month, pic nabbed six European Film Awards, including film and director. Polanski, however, did not attend the ceremony and appeared via Skype.

Polanski has seldom made public appearances since being freed from house arrest in Switzerland in July after local officials rejected an extradition request from the U.S. in connection with the sexual assault of a minor in 1977.

Helmer, who’s lived in France for more than 30 years, received support from Gallic film industryites and artists, notably Cannes Film Festival prexy Gilles Jacob and director Bertrand Tavernier, while he was under house arrest.

The French equivalent to the Golden Globes, the Lumieres are voted on by foreign correspondents in France. Event is backed by the city of Paris and Gallic film orgs including the CNC, Unifrance and TV5Monde.
