Dominic Cooper stars in Lee Tamahori pic based on true events
PARK CITY, UTAH — Lionsgate is nearing a deal for domestic rights to Lee Tamahori’s pic “The Devil’s Double” for an estimated $2 million to $3 million.Pic, which toplines Brit thesp Dominic Cooper and Ludivine Sagnier, had a number of buyers circling the project since its preem on Saturday at the Eccles Theater. According to insiders, buyers from Summit and Relativity Media saw the film during private midnight screenings in Park City, but Lionsgate beat them out for the bid. The nearly-completed deal, which includes a P&A commitment from Lionsgate, comes a day after the pic was sold to Icon Film Distribution for Australia and New Zealand for a six-figure sum. Story, based on actual events, follows the tale of Latif Yahia, an Iraqi army lieutenant who was summoned to Saddam Hussein’s palace in 1987 and ordered to become the body double of his eldest son. As is, pic would receive a hard R rating, though Lionsgate is no stranger to releasing adult fare with titles like torture-porn franchise “Saw.” Pic is repped by CAA and Paradigm for domestic and Corsan World Sales for foreign.
