Company greenlights 'Last Hijack,' 'Mister Wu'
Gallic shingle Les Films d’Ici, which had an arthouse hit with “Waltz With Bashir,” is ramping up its animation production with two hybrid live-action/toon features, “The Last Hijack” and “Mister Wu.”
“The Last Hijack,” which is co-directed by Tommy Pallotta (“A Scanner Darkly”) and Femke Wolting, deals with the issue of piracy in Somalia.
Pic is set up as a co-production between Wolting’s Amsterdam-based outfit Submarine, Ireland’s Still Films and Les Films d’Ici. “Hijack” has received coin from the Irish Film Board and Dutch Media Fund.
Pre-sales were inked with Benelux film distributor Inspire Pictures, U.K.’s Channel 4, Gaul’s Cine Plus, Norway’s NRK, Estonian TV and Netherlands’ Ikon TV.
“Hijack” will feature filmed footage as well as 30 minutes of cutout animation.
“Mister Wu,” which is helmed by Patrick Zachmann and Liu Jian, turns on a French photojournalist prepping a book on the Chinese diaspora. It is based on Zachmann’s own experiences.
Liu, who will create “Wu’s” animated sections, presented his feature debut “Piercing I” in competition at Annecy last year.
