Kusturica to lead Un Certain Regard jury

Cannes film festival runs May 11-22

Serbian helmer-actor Emir Kusturica will serve as prexy of Un Certain Regard jury at the 64th Cannes Film Festival.

Kusturica has been a Cannes favorite since winning a Palme d’Or and a Fipresci Prize for “When Father Was Away on Business” in 1985.

Part of the Official Selection, Un Certain Regard showcases 20 films that stand out for the originality of their narrative and visual treatment. The filmmaker won Cannes’ director nod in 1989 for “Time of the Gypsies” and a second Palme d’Or in 1995 for “Underground.” More recently, Kusturica’s “Life Is a Miracle” and “Promise Me This” played in competition at Cannes.

Kusturica recently wrapped the shoot of “The Source,” a Morocco-set dramedy starring Leila Bekhti. Pic will open in France on Nov. 2.

Kusturica and his jury will award the Un Certain Regard prize during the fest’s closing weekend.

Headed by French helmer Claire Denis, last year’s Un Certain Regard jury honored Hong Sang-soo’s comedy “Ha Ha Ha” with the top prize, and Daniel and Diego Vega’s “October” with a Jury nod.

The Cannes fest (May 11-22) will unveil its selections April 14 in Paris.
