Exclusive: 11-year-old thesp Joey King has landed the coveted role of China Girl in Disney’s “Oz: The Great and Powerful.”
Sam Raimi is directing the 3D fantasy pic, which is a prequel to “The Wizard of Oz” that finds the titular character arriving in the Land of Oz and being treated like a wizard by the colorful locals.
James Franco and Mila Kunis star alongside Michelle Williams and Rachel Weisz, whose villainous character Evanora is an evil witch who has destroyed China Girl’s family. Oz takes pity on her and becomes a reluctant surrogate father to the innocent young girl, who is made of porcelain.
Joe Roth is producing “Oz” alongside Josh Donen and Grant Curtis. Pic is scheduled to start production this July in Michigan, and Disney will release the tentpole on March 8, 2013.
King, best known for playing Ramona in last year’s “Ramona and Beezus,” recently booked a supporting role in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises.” Thesp stars in NBC’s Amanda Peet series “Bent” and will soon be seen in “Crazy, Stupid, Love,” which Warner Bros. releases July 29.
King is repped by Coast to Coast Talent and manager Dan Spilo of Industry Entertainment.
