Joel Edgerton is in final negotiations to play Tom Buchanan in Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow’s “The Great Gatsby,” rounding out the cast led by Leonardo DiCaprio.
Baz Luhrmann will direct with Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Isla Fisher and Elizabeth Debicki also starring.
In the film based on the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic, Edgerton will play Buchanan, the wealthy and brutish husband of Daisy Buchanan (Mulligan), who has an affair of sorts with the mysterious Jay Gatsby (DiCaprio).
Production is set to get underway at the end of July in Australia.
Edgerton’s name has come up a lot these days, drawing interest for “The Bourne Legacy” (which went to Jeremy Renner), “Snow White and the Huntsman” (Chris Hemsworth) and the untitled Kathryn Bigelow/Mark Boal pic about the hunt for Osama Bin Laden (still in the running).
He can be seen next in “Warrior” with Tom Hardy.
Edgerton is repped by CAA.
