Latest pic from Catalan dread maestro Balaguero

Among a bevy of post-Toronto fest deals, Barcelona-based Filmax Intl. has licensed rights on Catalan helmer Jaume Balaguero’s “Sleep Tight” to Japan’s New Select.

Psycho-thriller “Tight” also sold after the Canadian fest to Venezuela (Cines Unidos), and Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Hungary (Film Europe).

Ivan Diaz, head of Filmax’s international division, announced the sales at Sitges festival.

Other recent sales include Australia (Rialto Distribution), Hong Kong (Edko Films), Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador (Eurofilms), Portugal (Lusomundo), Greece (Videorama Films), Middle East (Gulf Film), Mexico (Corazon Films), Turkey (Duka Film) and former Yugoslavia (MCF MegaCom).

“Tight’s” script is penned by Alberto Marini, who also exec produced and wrote a novel inspired by the story parallel to the film.

“Tight” world preemed at late September’s Austin Fantastic Fest before segueing to Sitges Saturday for its European premiere. It played South Korea’s Busan Film Festival Monday.

“I think ‘Tight’ is Balaguero’s most mature film, although its atmosphere is not far from his first film, ‘The Nameless,'” said Diaz.

Warmly received by critics and bloggers at Sitges, it’s a change of direction for Balaguero, as he moves from the gore of the “REC” films to a more character-driven introspective suspense. Diaz believes “Tight’s” demo target is much wider than for the “REC” saga.

Filmax, a production-distribution house with exhibition interests, will bow “Tight” in Spain Friday on 280 screens. It opens in France Dec. 28 via Wild Side Films.
