'Rango,' transmedia also subject of panels

James Cameron and Vince Pace will join the lineup at this year’s NAB Show in Las Vegas as opening keynote speakers on April 11, while Hal Hickel, John Knoll and Crash McCreery are slated for a panel on the film “Rango” to be moderated by Variety’s David Cohen.

Cameron and Pace — the d.p. for Los Angeles-based work on “Avatar” — plan to talk about emerging technologies in the 3D arena and innovations in storytelling that incorporate 3D. They’ll also discuss how these developments will impact the entertainment industry overall.

The pair have worked together on 3D tech projects. Together they created an advanced stereoscopic acquisition system known as Fusion 3D, one of the most utilized 3D workflow systems available.

“Rango: The Next Step in CG Animation” — a panel featuring animation helmer Hal Hickel, vfx supervisor John Knoll and production designer Crash McCreery — was also just added to the list of NAB events. Session will give aud a closer look at the boundary-pushing animation and vfx techniques used in the film and will also be moderated by Cohen, author of “The Ballad of Rango: The Art and Making of an Outlaw Film.”

NAB has also announced a panel centered on everyone’s favorite new buzzword — transmedia. Media scholar Henry Jenkins, who has been credited as the originator of the term, will moderate “Transmedia: Telling the Story Through Narrative Content, Games and Real-World Adventures.”

Panel aims to analyze the fundamental components needed for a successful transmedia property, which easily travels from one platform to another, using the examples from recent and soon-to-be-released films, TV shows and vidgames. Panelists will also discuss how multiplayer participation in videogames is changing storytelling.

Session participants include Danny Bilson, exec VP, Core Games, THQ; Jeff Gomez, transmedia producer & CEO, Starlight Runner Entertainment; Gale Anne Hurd, producer; Tim Kring, multiplatform storyteller (“Conspiracy for Good,” “Heroes”) and Kim Moses, exec producer-director-writer, Sander/Moses Prods./Slam (“Ghost Whisperer”).
