Ionesco’s ‘Princess’ wins in Mumbai

Pilote's 'Le Vendeur' nabs grand jury award

MUMBAI — Helmer Eva Ionesco’s French-language “My Little Princess” took top honors at the Mumbai film fest Thursday.

Pic won the Golden Gateway Award for best film, which carries a cash prize of $100,000. Ionesco also won the Silver Gateway award for best director.

Isabelle Huppert and Anamaria Vartolomei shared the best actress award for “Princess.”

Canadian helmer Sebastien Pilote’s “Le Vendeur” (The Salesman) won the grand jury award that has a cash prize of $50,000. Gilbert Sicotte won best actor for the film.

Cinematographer Diego Poleri won the technical excellence award for Spanish-language “Las Acacias.” Debutant Austrian helmer Markus Schleinzer won the special jury award for “Michael.”

Morgan Freeman, lead of closing night film “Dolphin Tale,” won the international lifetime achievement award. Like most of the international winners on the night, he was not present in Mumbai, but accepted through a pre-recorded video link.

Multihyphenate Gulzar was accorded the Indian lifetime achievement award.

The festival screened more than 200 films from 60 countries and attracted an audience of some 100,000 patrons. Fest is backed by Reliance Entertainment.
