Hernandez attached to write screenplay
Sony Pictures Animation has acquired rights to develop live action-CGI hybrid “Instant Karma,” with Paul Hernandez attached to pen the script.
“Instant Karma,” which belonged to New Line Cinema since 2003, is a production of visual f/x shop Digital Domain and marks the company’s second producing credit after 2003’s “Secondhand Lions.”
When New Line was developing “Karma,” the project had attached a voice cast that included Pierce Brosnan, Mira Sorvino, David Alan Grier and Eartha Kitt.
“Karma” tells the story of a New Orleans safecracker, who dies and is reincarnated as a series of different animals, moving his way up the food chain.
Terry Rossio and Ted Elliot, scribes of “Pirates of the Caribbean,” will produce the pic.
Sony Animation recently nabbed remake rights to Janet Foxley’s kid book “Muncle Trogg,” and will next release live action-animation hybrid “The Smurfs” on July 29, followed by a slate of toons, including “Hotel Transylvania” and “Arthur Christmas.”
