Distrib to release pic in Australia, New Zealand

PARK CITY — Icon Film Distribution has snapped up rights to Lee Tamahori’s pic “The Devil’s Double” for Australia and New Zealand for a six-figure sum.

Pic, which toplines Brit thesp Dominic Cooper and Ludivine Sagnier, had a number of bidders vying for rights in those territories since the pic preemed here in Sundance on Saturday at the Eccles Theater.

Deal was negotiated today by Corsan World Sales’ Pascal Borno, who is repping international sales on the pic, and Icon’s Mark Gooder.

A list of domestic buyers are circling the pic, repped by CAA and Paradigm.

Pic, based on actual events, follows the tale of Latif Yahia, an Iraqi army lieutenant who was summoned to Saddam Hussein’s palace in 1987 and ordered to become the body double of his eldest son.

Icon also has Tamahori’s first feature pic, “Once Were Warriors,” in its library.

Corsan is anticipating closing deals on Blighty and Canada this week with offers coming in from Lionsgate, Momentum, Icon and the majors for U.K. rights.

Pic is screening at the Berlin Film Festival on February 11 in its Panorama section, where the sales agent is hoping to secure a slew of European and international deals.
