Fest to feature pics by Nelson, Sturman and Menkin
“The Hollywood Complex,” Dylan Nelson and Dan Sturman’s take on thesps chasing dreams during pilot season, and “Dolphin Boy,” Dani Menkin’s pic about dolphin-assisted therapy, will world preem at the Hot Docs Canadian Documentary Festival, North America’s largest doc event, organizers announced Tuesday.
The films are among the 26 special presentations for the event, which unspools in Toronto April 28 to May 8. It will unveil its full list of pics on March 22.
Also on the slate are recent South by Southwest Festival world preems “Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop” and “Fightville,” Sundance hit “Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey,” Sundance audience prize winner “Buck” and “Love Shines.”
Among Tuesday’s international preems include actor Michael Rapaport’s directorial bow “Beats, Rhymes and Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest,” “Becoming Chaz,” “The Bully Project,” “Carol Channing: Larger Than Life” and “In Heaven, Underground: The Weissensee Jewish Cemetery.”
“The Advocate for Fagdom” and “My Barefoot Friend” receive North American preems, “Blood in the Mobile” and “The Good Life” are Canadian preems.
“Project Nim,” the latest from “Man on Wire” helmer James Marsh, is in the mix along with Alison Ellwood’s “Magic Trip” and Alex Gibney’s “Taxi to the Dark Side.”
Also on the slate are IDFA best feature docu winner “Position Among the Stars,” Leipzig Festival for Documentaries and Animation Golden Glove-winner “Vodka Factory” and Sundance World Cinema aud winner “Senna,” along with “Bobby Fisher Against the World,” “Mama Africa,” “Limelight” and Jennifer Fox’s “My Reincarnation,”
Omnibus docu “The National Parks Project” is a collaborative, cinematic celebration of Parks Canada’s centennial from 52 local filmmakers and musicians.
Official delegations from Brazil, China, France, Germany, Italy, the Nordic region, South Africa, the U.K. and U.S. will participate in the Intl. Co-Production Day on May 2 and are accredited to attend the Hot Docs Forum, the fest’s two-day international co-financing pitch event that starts May 4.
