Action-toon hybrid beats expecations with $11.4 mil

“Hop,” Universal’s live-action/animated pic, made a Friday debut above the studio’s projections, with about $11.4 million in 3,579 runs.

As expected by B.O. pundits, the pic beat two other freshman films, which were in the runner-up spots. Summit’s “Source Code” nabbed $5 million in 2,961 engagements, while FilmDistrict’s did nicely with its first release, “Insidious.” The modestly budgeted horror pic scared up $4.8 million at 2,408, capitalizing on the filmmakers’ “Saw” and “Paranormal Activity” credentials.

In fourth place, with $3 million in 2,838, was Relativity’s third-week “Limitless.”

That was followed by last weekend’s winner, Fox’s “Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2: Roderick Rules,” which held on OK considering the competish for the family audience from the new “Hop.” “Diary” collected about $2.8 million in 3,169 engagements. Friday’s fifth-place pic had earned $27 million heading into the weekend.

“The Lincoln Lawyer” from Lionsgate earned about $2 million in 2,707 runs, while Warner Bros.’ “Sucker Punch” looks a little punched-up with $1.9 million in 3,033. Paramount’s leggy “Rango” (3,134 runs) and Universal’s “Paul” (2,550 runs) each scored about $1.2 million on Friday. Sony’s “Battle: Los Angeles” finished out the top 10 with about $1 million in 2,263 engagements.
