Helmer in ‘Debt’ to his stars

Nearly two years late, John Madden’s thriller “The Debt” finally arrived for its hometown premiere Sept. 21 at the Curzon theater in Mayfair. It was shot in 2009 for Miramax, and as producer Kris Thykier said, “It was made for one studio, moved to another studio who sold us out, then for a while owned by a hedge fund.” Universal releases in the U.K.

Madden pointed out that he had deliberately chosen Jessica Chastain as an unknown actress so that auds would buy her as the younger version of Helen Mirren, but the delayed release and Chastain’s subsequent stardom undermined that strategy.

“We had hoped to be her debut, but we are very happy to be her third film,” he said.
