Turkish pic's lede thesp named best actor

SHANGHAI — Orhan Oguz’s “Hayde Bre” won the Golden Goblet for best feature at the Shanghai Intl. Film Festival on Sunday, while the Turkish pic’s lead thesp Sevket Emrulla was named best actor.

The jury, led by U.S. helmer Barry Levinson, hailed the pic’s “stark, honest, unflinching” examination of the relationship between a woman and her widowed father in Macedonia.

The awards marked the end of the nine-day festival, now in his 14th year, which this year attracted more than 3,000 biz figures from all over the world.

The top helmer award went to China’s Han Jie for “Mr. Tree,” which also took the Jury Grand Prix. Pic was produced by Jia Zhangke, who won the Golden Lion at Venice in 2006 for “Still Life.”

Lu Xingchen took best actress for “The Young Man Sings Folk Song in the Opposite Door,” with Zhang Ming’s pic about love stories of Chinese young living in the countryside also sealing screenplay and soundtrack awards.

The jury award went to Thai pic “Friday Killer” by Yuthlert Sippapak.

Other jury members included British screenwriter Christopher Hampton, Japanese helmer Yoichi Sai, French-Vietnamese filmmaker Tran Anh Hung, Chinese helmer Wang Quanan, Spanish thesp Paz Vega and Chinese actress Zhang Jingchu.

Tong Gang, head of the film bureau of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, hailed the success of the festival.

“It is now one of the most influential film festivals in Asia-Pacific regions,” Tong said.
