Sony pic to launch wide on 3,584 screens

Sony’s action comedy “The Green Hornet” posted $550,000 from approximately 700 midnight screenings.

According to the studio, “Hornet” scored comparable late-night takes to summer blockbusters like “Salt” and “The Other Guys.” Pic, toplining Seth Rogen and Jay Chou, should parlay that momentum through the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend as January typically isn’t a busy time for midnights.

“Hornet” launches wide today at 3,584 domestic locations, of which 2,704 are 3D-equipped, including 174 Imax runs. It’s 3D format should lift grosses somewhat given higher premiums for 3D.

The film also went day and date this weekend in 35 overseas territories.

Stateside, “Hornet” will compete with fellow wide release “The Dilemma,” which Universal bowed at 2,941 locations.
