Grateful Dead pic gets 540-screen release

1977 concert doc will feature new footage

The 1977 concert doc “The Grateful Dead Movie” will be revived April 20 as a theatrical event on 540 U.S. screens.

Pic, shot at San Francisco’s Winterland in 1974 at the height of the group’s popularity, is being re-mounted by Warner Music Group’s Rhino Entertainment division, which exclusively markets the Dead’s catalog, and digital exhibition specialist NCM Fathom, which has presented bigscreen events like last summer’s live “Big Four” metal show by Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax.

The ’11 edition of “The Grateful Dead Movie” will be augmented by new interview footage by the band’s late guitarist Jerry Garcia (who co-directed the feature with Leon Gast) and singer-guitarist Bob Weir.
