Golden Frog hops to Dylewska

Camerimage fetes Polish d.p.

From a pool of fest sensations including “Tree of Life,” “Melancholia,” “We Need to Talk About Kevin” and “Shame,” Poland’s 19th Plus Camerimage, which honors cinematographers, bestowed its Golden Frog on local d.p. Jolanta Dylewska for her work on Warsaw native Agnieszka Holland’s “In Darkness.”

The jury included director Roger Donaldson, film critic Elvis Mitchell and d.p. Dante Spinotti, who will receive the American Society of Cinematographers’ lifetime achievement award in February.

“Suicide Room,” directed by Jan Komasa and shot by Radoslaw Ladczuk, took top prize in the Polish film competition, while the Laszlo Kovacs Student Award went to d.p. Balazs Revesz and director Balasz Simonyi for their work on “Finale.” Helmer/d.p. Tomasz Wolski took the Golden Frog in the feature doc competition for “Doctors.”

Karl Markovics won the Directors Debuts sidebar for “Breathing” and Radoslaw Ladczuk took the Cinematographers Debuts honor for “Suicide Room.”

Among fest guests, Aussie d.p. John Seale, known for his work with Anthony Minghella (“The English Patient,” “Cold Mountain”), was honored for lifetime achievement, as were production designer Jack Fisk (“Tree of Life,” “There Will Be Blood”), Austrian actor Klaus Maria Brandauer (“Mephisto,” “Out of Africa”) and director/d.p. tandem Todd Haynes and Ed Lachman. Others given tributes included Polish helmer Andrzej Wadja (“Ashes and Diamonds”) and documentarian Albert Maysles (“Gimme Shelter”).

The eight-day fest took place in Bydgoszcz for the second year after a disagreement with city officials in its longtime home of Lodz forced the move.
