New shingle signs first-look distribution deal with Universal

While production deals have taken a dip in recent years, Universal is still creating new relationships, signing a first-look distribution deal with Angle Films.

Gold Circle Films’ Paul Brooks and Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Prods. have come together to form the new shingle whose mandate is to finance and produce genre films with budgets ranging from $15 million to $30 million.

“I’m excited to collaborate with Paul and Universal to add mid-budget genre films to our existing low-budget business,” Blum said. “Universal has been a great partner for Blumhouse and I look forward to expanding our relationship.”

Both producers recently signed deals with the studio and gravitate to similar types of films such as “Paranormal Activity” and “White Noise.”

“Jason and Paul are at the top of their game in producing genre films, which is why the teaming of these two talented filmmakers is such an attractive proposition for Universal,” said U chairman Adam Fogelson and co-chair Donna Langley. “Building on these relationships to find exciting new projects is a great opportunity for both of our companies.”

The studio has signed a clutch of deals this year, most recently with Vin Diesel and his One Race Films banner.
