Ruby Films pic screens in Berlin Specials

Brit shingle Ruby Films’ culinary pic “Toast,” toplining Helena Bonham Carter, has sold to Germany’s MFA Films.

The pic, based on the bestselling memoir of Blighty food writer and cook Nigel Slater (played by Freddie Highmore), was snapped up from K5 Intl.

“Toast” is screening in the Berlinale Special and Culinary Cinema sections, and while it aired on TV in Blighty on BBC1, the 90-minute feature is also being shopped for theatrical distribution.

Bonham Carter will touch ground at the Berlinale to promote the pic.

Ruby Films’ toppers Alison Owen and Paul Trijbits also have an adaptation of “Jane Eyre,” starring Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender, which Focus Features is releasing domestically in March.

Owen founded Ruby a decade ago and has produced pics including “Brick Lane,” “Proof” and “Sylvia.” Trijbits joined the shingle after six years as head of the U.K. Film Council’s New Cinema Fund.

Owen also has an informal co-producing relationship with Scott Rudin.
