German Currents kicks off with ‘Almanya’

L.A. series includes finance panel

L.A.’s Goethe Institut is kicking off its fifth annual German Currents film series, which runs Wednesday through Sunday, with a screening of German-Turkish comedy “Almanya: Welcome to Germany” and an opening party at the Egyptian Theater.

On Saturday, a panel discussion at 12:30 at the Goethe-Institut on Wilshire Blvd. will cover “How Do I Get My Film Funded?” with participation from filmmakers and German funders.

Also screening are recent German titles including “The Poll Diaries,” Cannes Un Certain Regard winner “Stopped on Track,” “Jasmin,” “The Day I Was Not Born,” “Westwind,” “If Not Us, Who?,” “Sleeping Sickness” and docu “Charlotte Rampling: The Look.” Screenings will be held at the Egyptian, the Goethe Institut and the Aero Theater in Santa Monica.
