Film pair to close Venice fest sidebar

'Monkey,' 'Annunciation' close Horizons sidebar Sept. 10

Belgian multi-hypenate Wim Vandekeybus’ “Monkey Sandwich” and Finnish visual artist and director Eija-Liisa Ahtila’s “The Annunciation” will close the Venice Film Festival’s Horizons sidebar Sept. 10.

“Siglo ng pagluluwal” (Century of Birthing) by helmer Lav Diaz, father of New Philippine Cinema, has been added to Horizons Events.

“Monkey Sandwich” follows a theatrical group putting on a play and telling each other stories, while actor Damien Chapelle appears live on stage attempting to interact with the onscreen characters. Vandekeybus is a director, choreographer, performer and photographer.

“The Annunciation” is a cinematic reworking of the elements of a video installation by Ahtila, who is a Venice jury member this year.

“Century of Birthing,” which is preeming, tells two seemingly unrelated tales: one focusing on a filmmaker who has spent years working on his latest opus; the other about a Christian cult leader in a rural region.

The Venice fest runs Aug. 31 to Sept. 10.
