Abel Ferrara will be feted by the Locarno Film Festival with its Swisscom Leopard of Honor for career achievement.
Ferrara — praised by Locarno artistic director Olivier Pere as “a maestro with the soul of a rock rebel and a distinctive spirituality” — will sneak-preview footage from his upcoming pic, the apocalyptic “4:44 Last Day on Earth,” starring Willem Dafoe and Shanyn Leigh, co-produced by Fabula, Funny Balloons and Wild Bunch.
The ceremony will take place Aug. 5 at Locarno’s 8,000-seat Piazza Grande, Europe’s largest open-air venue. Ferrara will also hold a masterclass.
A selection of Ferrara’s pics, including “King of New York,” “Bad Lieutenant,” and “Mary” will unspool as part of the tribute.
The fest’s 64th edition will run Aug. 3-13.
