5-year pact points to changing U.K. digital landscape
Entertainment One U.K. has inked a five-year content exclusive content deal with European online film and TV subscription service Lovefilm.Pact, which marks eOne’s first major deal with Lovefilm, will see the subscription service offer exclusively eOne’s new release catalog during their pay TV window. The first film released on the platform will be “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” which will be available beginning in October. Future films include Paul W.S. Anderson’s “The Three Musketeers in 3D,” toplining Orlando Bloom and Luke Evans; George Clooney’s “The Ides of March”; and the final installments of “The Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn.” Lovefilm, akin to Netflix in the U.S., already rents all available eOne DVD and Blu-ray titles via its online rent-by-mail service. The exclusive arrangement between the online service and the indie further cement the fact that the digital landscape in Blighty is changing. Lovefilm, which is owned by Amazon, is upping its game to challenge BSkyB’s monopoly of the U.K. TV market. In the past year, Optimum Releasing, Momentum Pictures and Icon have all struck deals with Lovefilm while earlier this week the subscription service announced that it was staffing up its operations by 20%, a sure sign that the biz intends to expand in its current markets, especially as U.S. giant Netflix may have its eye on Blighty. Alex Hamilton, eOnes director of film, told Variety the deal was an “another way to grow eOne’s business in the U.K.”
